Eligibility for a P-1 Visa

The P-1 visa is available to athletes, artists, and entertainers who have achieved a high level of skill in their field.

To qualify for a P-1 visa, the applicant must demonstrate that they are internationally recognized in their field of expertise. For individual athletes and entertainers, this means that they are one of the few who have risen to the top of their field and are known internationally. For groups, this means that the group has achieved a high level of skill and recognition in their field.

In addition to this requirement, the applicant must also be coming to the United States to participate in a specific event or competition. This means that they must have a contract or other written agreement with a U.S. employer for a specific performance or series of performances.

The P-1 visa is available to individual athletes and entertainers, as well as those who are part of a group. The requirements for each are slightly different.

To qualify as an individual athlete or entertainer, the applicant must:

  • Be internationally recognized in their field
  • Be coming to the United States to participate in a specific event or competition

To qualify as a group, the group must:

  • Have achieved a high level of skill and recognition in their field
  • Be coming to the United States to participate in a specific event or competition
  • Have a contract or other written agreement with a U.S. employer to perform at least 75% of the groups’ performances in the U.S.

The P-1 visa is also available to certain athletes, artists, and entertainers who are coming to the United States to teach, coach, or train others.

To qualify for a P-1 visa as a teacher, coach, or trainer, the applicant must:

  • Be internationally recognized in their field
  • Be coming to the United States to teach, coach, or train others
  • Be coming to the United States to work with a specific employer

P-1 Visa Duration & Limits

The P-1 visa is a temporary, nonimmigrant work visa. This means that it is only available to individuals who plan to come to the United States for a temporary period of time.

The initial period of stay for a P-1 visa is typically the time it takes to complete the event or competition the applicant is coming to the United States to participate in.

The maximum period of stay for a P-1 visa is typically 5 years, but it can be extended beyond this time in certain situations.

The P-1 visa is typically available for multiple entries, which means that the holder can leave the United States and return using the same visa. The visa is also typically available for the holder’s spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21.

"Mr. Clarke will drop anything to help a client in distress, and that's why I have him in my speed dial"
It's good to have one reliable lawyer at your disposal. Mr. Clarke will drop anything to help a client in distress, and that's why I have him in my speed dial. Mr. Sekou has no limitations on the number of aliens in one case. Whatever the number, he will serve you to the best of his ability. Some law firms put a certain limit, thereby making it almost impossible to get the help one really needs.
    - Wanjiku N.
"A few weeks later I was released and now I'm adjusting my status to become a Permanent resident."
