Eligibility Requirements for TN (NAFTA Professionals) Visa

Canadian Citizens

Canadian citizens are generally eligible for a TN visa at a U.S. port of entry. However, they may also apply for a TN visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate before traveling to the United States. A Canadian citizen without a TN visa can apply for admission to TN status at a U.S. port of entry.

The Canadian citizen must provide the following documents to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer:

  1. Proof of Canadian citizenship
  2. Letter from the employer detailing the professional position
  3. Proof of professional qualifications
  4. Proof of intent to return to Canada at the end of the temporary stay in the United States
  5. Proof of payment of the USCIS filing fee

Mexican Citizens

Mexican citizens must obtain a TN visa from a U.S. Embassy or Consulate before traveling to the United States.

A Mexican citizen must provide the following documents to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate:

  1. Proof of Mexican citizenship
  2. Letter from the employer detailing the professional position
  3. Proof of professional qualifications
  4. Proof of intent to return to Mexico at the end of the temporary stay in the United States
  5. Proof of payment of the USCIS filing fee

Renewal of TN (NAFTA Professionals) Visa

A TN nonimmigrant may apply to renew their TN status for an additional period of one year. There is no limit on the number of times a TN nonimmigrant may renew their TN status. A Canadian or Mexican citizen may apply to renew their TN status with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at a U.S. port of entry.

The TN nonimmigrant must provide the following documents to the CBP officer:

  1. Valid passport
  2. Form I-94, Arrival/Departure Record
  3. Letter from the employer detailing the professional position
  4. Proof of professional qualifications
  5. Proof of intent to return to the foreign country at the end of the temporary stay in the United States
  6. Proof of payment of the USCIS filing fee

Change of Employer

A TN nonimmigrant may change employers. If the TN nonimmigrant is a Canadian citizen, the TN nonimmigrant may apply for admission in TN status with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at a U.S. port of entry.
